Well living here we all knew that the night skies are pretty dark, but according to the results of a national star count survey conducted by CPRE in February 2019, Luddington in the Brook has the darkest skies in the whole of the East of the UK.
A record 2,300 people joined in this year’s count, and the results show how badly affected by light pollution many areas are. The survey asked participants to count how many stars they could see in the constellation of Orion with the naked eye.
Some of the most notable findings include:
- Well over half of people (57%) failed to see more than ten stars, indicating severe light pollution.
- Only 9% of respondents experienced ‘dark skies’, counting between 21 and 30 stars.
- Just 2% experienced ‘truly dark skies’ and were able to count more than 30 stars. Luddington in the Brook falls within this category
The results of the survey can be found here.
The first Luddy lunch of the year will be held at the Andersons at 1pm on 31st March, ‘Mothering Sunday’. Please could you let Jennifer know if you are coming, by the previous Friday night.
A team of keen volunteers braved the drizzle to make a start on clearing the back of the churchyard. Thanks to all involved!
A huge thank you to Francesca who over the last few weeks has scrubbed clean all the road signs in the village, volunteering her time as part of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. They were completely filthy beforehand but as you can see they are now sparkling. Thank you!
Due to unforeseen events, the first Luddy Lunch of the year at the Wills’ on 24th January is now cancelled.
Our next Luddy Lunch will be in March at the Anderson’s – more details soon
Its nearly Christmas and on Friday 21st at 7.30pm, we will be having our Christmas Carol party in the Church. For those who don’t know, this is not a carol service but a chance to catch up, sip mulled wine, munch sausage rolls etc and most importantly sing carols accompanied by Ibby who has again kindly agreed to play the organ for us. It’s very informal, very ‘ Christmassy’ and great fun so do come if you can.
